World War II nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall mysteriously travels back in time to Scotland in 1743. There, she meets a highland warrior and is drawn into an epic rebellion. Moore (the series’ creator), his staff decided to keep the Gaelic words instead of translating them into English.

This kept the narration in the first person, which reflects Claire’s inability to understand Gaelic. The opening song changes from season to season to reflect what is happening in the storyline

In the first half of season 2 (which is set in France), some of the lyrics are in French. In the second half of season 2 (mostly about preparing for war), a militaristic drum is added to the opening song. Tribal drums are added in season 3, as most of the season is set in the West Indies.

In season 4, bluegrass fiddle and banjo are added, and some of the lyrics are sung with a Southern accent, as the season is mostly set in America. I sang the entire series and loved it!

At first I thought it was a female-centric show, but I was wrong. This show has something for everyone and has become one of my favorites, so I’m glad I finally gave it a chance!
